Who founded Dryad Gin and what inspired its creation?
Dryad Gin was founded by Becky Wright, a master gin distiller and company owner, who launched the gin in 2022. Becky was inspired to create Dryad Gin by a desire to create community and connection between people, purpose, and place, particularly after observing the closure of many traditional country pubs that rural communities relied on to thrive. Becky’s personal motivation also stemmed from a need to inject fun and positivity back into her life after losing her mother, Sheila, in 2021. Her mother, who loved gin and hospitality, serves as a legacy for Dryad Gin, aiming to create love, warmth and laughter
What makes Dryad Gin different?

What is the "Blackbird's Beak" ritual?
The “Blackbird’s Beak” is a little ritual toast inspired by Becky Wright’s mother, Sheila, who is represented as a blackbird on the gin’s imagery. It is customary to pour a “blackbird’s beakful” of Dryad Gin over your shoulder and back into the earth to honour the creative collaboration and our co-existence with nature. Each year at the Dryad Gin blessing ceremony this ritual is performed.
Where does the name Dryad come from?
The name Dryad Gin is rooted in mythology and a spiritual connection with nature. It is inspired by mythical tree spirits known as Dryads, who, in Greek mythology, were ethereal nymph spirits that gave their lives to protect majestic oak trees that have nourished the land for centuries.
Beyond the mythological origin, the dryad also serves as a metaphor for Becky Wright’s goal for the gin: reaching out into the community, making connections, and creating a little magic.

What is The Dryad Inn?
The Dryad Inn is Dryad Gin’s travelling community public house of no fixed abode. It is a pop-up pub initiative that transforms village halls into mystical pubs with the help of fairy lights, toadstools, and volunteers, bringing people together for evenings of joyful revelry. It serves local beers, wines, ciders, soft drinks, and, of course, Dryad Gin, including new gin cocktail recipes.
Why did you start The Dryad Inn?
The Dryad Inn was created in response to the closure of many traditional country pubs in rural areas of Somerset, which threatened the wellbeing of local communities. Becky Wright was driven by a desire to bring people together, foster connection, and combat social isolation and loneliness. The first pop-up event in July 2022 at Broomfield Village Hall was a direct response to a “use it or lose it” plea from the Village Hall Committee.
How does The Dryad Inn operate and benefit local communities?
The Dryad Inn operates in rural locations where no local pub is currently in operation. It involves local volunteers, who gain valuable new skills.
The community is given a sense of ownership by being involved in creating recipes and cocktail-making. Tablecloths featuring ancient Somerset language are even designed to spark conversation and connection. The initiative helps bring together disparate groups and supports local businesses.
Can The Dryad Inn help our village start its own pop-up pub?
Yes, one of Dryad Gin’s goals is to support other villages in starting their own pop-up pubs to create hubs of connection where traditional pubs have been lost. For example, after The Dryad Inn held an event at Corfe Village Hall, the local people were so inspired they decided to create their own pop-up pub, the Corfe Pop-Up Pub, with support from Becky Wright and her team.
